INTERVIEW – The famous Uruguayan soprano, a long time resident of Verona, returns to the Arena for the 95th Opera Festival with two performances of Aida

We have interviewed sopranoMaria José Siri, born in Uruguay but a long time resident of Verona, who during the 2017 edition of the Opera Arena Festival interpreted the role of Aida for two performances.  «After 13 years and 21 productions – explains Siri – my view of this noble princess continues to change from one production to the next, with different stage directors and conductors, so much that I can interpret her like a docile and submissive slave or a warrior princess, with thousands of nuances between the two extremes. What does not change is that musically Aida is a dream».

– Ms. Siri, in five years you have had the chance to appear in three different productions of Aida in Verona: the Fura dels Baus’s in which you made her debut in 2013, Zeffirelli’s and this year, just like in 2016, De Bosio’s. What are the principal characteristics of each of them?

«These three stagings are very different among each other. The production of La Fura dels Baus is modern, innovative but respectful of the libretto. Zeffirelli created true magic with his opulent mise-en-scène, breathtaking sets and Anna Anni’s gorgeous costumes. The list of the great sopranos who have performed the role in this productions is long, and includes my beloved Maria Chiara, a role model for me».

– Last December you inaugurated the 2016/2017 season of the Teatro alla Scala making your debut as Madama Butterfly, in the opera’s original version. Could you describe for us the emotions you experienced that evening?

«It was an indescribable emotion and it certainly was the most important performance of my artistic life. We had rehearsed so much with Riccardo Chailly and Alvis Hermanis and thanks to this strict preparation I felt very secure and at ease. I am very happy for the success of this production that I will always carry in my heart».
